The course ‘Contar la Ciencia’ (Talking Science), promoted by Aquarbe and the Aquae Foundation, starts at the University of Cantabria

This course, which starts tomorrow and ends on 3 August, is led by Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón, holder of a PhD in Computer Languages and Systems and a scientific monologist for the scientist on wheels of Big Van.

As part of its summer courses, the University of Cantabria has organised the dossier Contar la Ciencia. Técnicas escénicas y de narración oral para la comunicación científica (Talking science. Theatrical and oral narration techniques for scientific communication), promoted by the Aquae Foundation and Aquarbe. The course has two objectives: to provide theatrical and narrative tools for science and communication professionals to improve their dissemination and communication techniques; and to train students to develop texts with a scientific content that could be aimed at a non-specialised audience.

This course, which will start tomorrow and end on 3 August in El Torco de Suances, an emblematic building that served as a bastion of coastal defence in the seventeenth century, is directed by Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón, holder of a PhD in Computer Languages and Systems from the Department of Mathematics and Computation of the University of Cantabria and a member of Big Van.

'The key to good scientific dissemination is that what you describe must be significant to the person that you are addressing; the content is not the same for a child, an old person, or an IT professional... You have to put yourself in the other person's place and think what is interesting for that person', said Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón.

The course is divided into different sessions to work on improvisation and creation of scientific content, creativity, and the creation of scientific texts or the presentation of monologues directly to the public. All these activities will be taught by Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón, Helena González Burón, and Oriol Marimón Garrido, all of whom are scientific monologists for 'Big Van. Científicos sobre ruedas’ (Big Van. Scientists on wheels); Alberto Coz Fernández (lecturer from the University of Cantabria); and Noelia Fernández Saez (Miriñaque Theatre's executive director).

This monograph is aimed at all those who are interested in direct oral scientific communication before an audience: scientists, lecturers, science professionals; science popularizers and scientific journalists; students and graduates; and employees in general who are interested in scientific communication.

The course, which has 60 places and whose enrolment period ends today is part of the summer courses at the University of Cantabria.
